Relieve Degenerative Disc Back Pain With Massage Chair Therapy

A degenerative disc problem in the spinal column can cause lower back pain. There are sometimes changes to the discs from what is termed degenerative disc disease. This condition is estimated to affect up to 30% of those in the age range of 30 to 50 years old. As the disc degenerates, the vertebrae come in closer contact causing pain. To relieve some of the pain associated with degenerative disc disease, massage chairs have been used successfully.

Why does the pain occur? Let us look at the structure of the spinal column. The spinal column is a vertical row of small round bones that are interconnected. The interconnection provides the ability for the spine to articulate or bend. Down the middle these round bones or vertebrae runs the spinal cord.

The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that travels from the base of the brain out to the rest of the body. The spinal column itself protects the spinal cord and gives the body flexibility and mobility. Between each of the vertebrae are soft discs. These soft discs are there to cushion the motion between the bones so the bones do not rub directly on each other.

Certain activities such as wear and tear, aging and misuse such as smoking can cause degenerative changes to the spinal column. The intervertebral discs are one structure that is susceptible to degenerative changes. The challenge is early detection of these changes. Biochemical and structural changes may occur long before direct visible detection via imaging can be discerned.

Therefore, some deterioration may occur. The deterioration of the soft tissue separating the vertebrae is reported to cause dull or sharp pains. Massage therapy has been used in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments to help reduce the friction. This also helps to reduce the associated pain between the degenerated discs.

In general, the pain associated with degenerative disc disease is low back pain. The spinal column carries much of the weight of the body. As activity is undertaken, the physical stress is distributed throughout the spine. Normally, the low back experiences more stress and fatigue. With disc degeneration there is a high incidence of inflammation.

Massage chair therapy has been used in two different forms to help relieve the pain associated with degenerative disc disease. A finger press or rolling type of massage is used to alleviate pressure between the discs. Kneading and tapping massages are used to loosen the muscles in and around the spinal column.

The finger press massage puts pressure on each vertebra in the spinal column. This small movement helps to stretch and elongate the soft tissue and muscles around the disc. The rolling is performed up and down the spinal column, disc by disc. This helps to reduce pressure and uneven stress on the spinal column.

Kneading and tapping style massages are used to loosen the muscles and connective tissue around the spinal column and the back in general. Pressure tends to concentrate on a few areas in the spinal column with most activities. Loosening up these muscles helps to rebalance the pressure and better redistribute it.

Although massage chair therapy has been successful in certain degenerative discs disease cases, you should consult with your medical provider to find the right treatments for your situation. Massage chair therapy is a convenient and practical alternative to using a masseuse. The convenience and access to these important pain relieving therapies are imperative.

Massage chairs provide an effective massage treatment to help reduce the pain in the lower back. Many massage chairs have incorporated heat therapy, music and even traction systems to provide a range of therapies. All of these are available in the comfort of your home. Imagine that you could get the pain relief you need whenever you want it!

Don’t suffer from the discomfort of lower back pain! Check out a range of Massage Chairs with excellent capabilities to relieve and soothe your muscles. Frequent Massage Chair Therapy helps to induce greater flexibility of the muscles with stretching and elongation. This helps to spinal column to better cope with the pressure put on it. See what best fits your needs today.

Electronic Health Records

Over the last few years I have observed conversations and information regarding the need for electronic health information and electronic medical records on a national scale. The information to date has seemed very promising and enabling; however, I am concerned that with the rush to implement, we as a nation may over look some items that I feel are necessary safety and security protocols.

Currently, if a person is the victim of medical identity theft they have a great deal of “proving” to do before anyone will help them, In addition, there is a great deal of existing proof that even after the hospitals and creditors have been satisfied of the remedy, there exists the long term danger of “tainted” information.

When a person is the victim of identity theft medical care is provided, entries are made, and claims are filed with the insurance payer. In an all-electronic world each of these entities would be making entries into a system that is more universal in nature. While this may actually aid in the proper delivery of care, it can also aid in the delivery of improper care that could result in long term injury and death.

There are currently several systems providers that deliver a type of “patient profile” that is based on previous claims data. If the data is compromised between a real patient data and co-mingled with data from the “false patient” [the person who used someone else's insurance information], the provider attempting to deliver no-voice-no-vote care in an emergency situation may actually rely on information that does not accurately represent the person in their emergency room.

Over the last several months I have heard and read where executives from several companies are talking down regarding safety protocols and medical/health records mitigation as nothing more than hurdles and obstacles to improving healthcare information delivery. I believe this to be self-serving and disingenuous for several reasons:

1. Adding safety and records mitigation protocols ensure patient safety as an ongoing concept and practice

2. No industry would be allowed to operate, where the officials in charge of it stated that the market or other bodies would be responsible for creating safety procedures. Can you imagine if the auto industry stated, “we make cars, let the market figure out how to regulate safety”? I doubt that Congress or any other body would consider these people as remotely credible, yet I hear time and time again these statements being made in public and private forums by executives, lobbyists, and even so-called healthcare leaders.

3. For the public and providers to embrace a product that has no regulation, no built-in safeguards, and obviously no importance to safety from the makers of these products, why would Congress expect the American public or health care providers to embrace a product or concept that involves the unregulated risk of injury, death, or staggering liability opportunities, let alone without any hope of remedy or proper relief?

I have a passion for healthcare delivery and believe that people should receive nothing but the best leadership in this matter from all levels of local, state, and federal government, when it comes to our countries best long term interests.

Crohn’s Disease Medication

Though researches have not yet been able to find out the cure of Crohn’s disease, but there are various effectual medical as well as surgical treatments for the disease. For a person with Crohn’s it is essential that he/she is having a good nutrition. The person is also required to maintain the health with a balanced diet, regular exercise along with a positive attitude. Generally people suffer from mild to moderate Crohn’s disease. They can be treated with Crohn’s disease medication that contains mesalamine. These medicines are different for various parts of the bowel that are required to be treated. Some of these medications are Sulfasalazine, Asacol, Pentasa and Dipentum.

Patients may suffer from nausea, headache and diarrhea. If disease in the rectum is leading to symptoms, then one must have suppository therapy along with mesalamine, as it is very effective in both acquiring and maintaining remission.

5-Aminosalicylic Acid (5-ASA) Compounds: Various Crohn’s disease medications also contain an active ingredient i.e. 5-aminosalicylic acid, due to which inflammation causing substances in the immune system get hampered. These include Sulfasalazine and Azulfadine.

Steroid: No doubt steroid is powerful but it is toxic Crohn’s disease medication that minimizes inflammation and curbs the immune system of the body. Most widely used steroids are Prednisone and Prednisolone to treat Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. It is the fact that they are useful but at the same time they can also cause various serious side effects that can reach up to a serious extent. Side effects like puffiness in the face, acne, insomnia, night sweats, weight gain and mood swings can be irritating while side effects such as high blood pressure, osteoporosis and psychosis are quite dangerous. These medications can be taken to treat symptoms during a flare-up, but must be avoided as son as remission is achieved.

Immunomodulating Medication: It is also a Crohn’s disease medication, which hampers the inflammation in the disease. However, they must be use only after the prescription of a gastroenterologist. They are potential compounds, which supersedes the natural immune defenses of the body.

Antibiotics: Latest researches have pointed out bacteria as a prominent element in Crohn’s disease. That is why; antibiotics are gaining popularity as Crohn’s disease medication. Antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin, Clarthromycin and Ampicillin are used during short course of Crohn’s treatment. The most popular and widely used antibiotic is metronidazole. This medicine is generally given to achieve remission during for four to eight weeks of flare-ups, though it is not recommended as maintenance therapy.

In the end, there are also several other Crohn’s disease medications that can be taken to treat Crohn’s , but since it is incurable having a proper diet and health life style is the best way to make life comfortable in this disease along with treatment.

Lung Cancer Symptoms – What to Look For

Lung cancer symptoms are very elusive and misleading. Mostly the condition is diagnosed only after having reached advanced stages. As of now there is no screening procedure for lung cancer. Symptoms are almost non existent where lung cancer is concerned.

There might be a mild cough or shortness of breath that can also be attributed to some respiratory infections. This is the main reason as to why most of the lung cancer cases go undiagnosed in the early stages. Only a meager 16% of the cases are diagnosed early enough to facilitate treatment and cure.

Some of the symptoms that we can investigate are as follows:

1 – A new persistent cough that refuses to go away. Smokers usually have cough but if they have cancer the severity of the cough would be different.
2 – Chest pain is another indication that usually goes unnoticed. The pain can deepen with difficulty in breathing accompanied with cough or laugh.
3 – The throat is hoarse and when accompanied with wheezing can indicate inflammation of the lungs which could be cancer.
4 – There is gradual loss of weight due to loss of appetite.
5 – Hemoptysis or coughing up blood is a sure indication of cancer. The coughed up phlegm would be rust colored showing the presence of blood.
6 – The patient can suffer from shortness of breath due to blockage of air caused by pleural effusion or fluid collection around the lungs or spread of tumor in the lungs.
7 – Repeated respiratory illnesses like bronchitis and pneumonia are a cause for concern. This could be indicative of lung cancer.

The cancer metastasizes or spreads to other organs in the body; if it goes undetected in the first or early stages. Lung cancer usually is found to spread to the bones, the brain, liver, pericardium or the lining of the heart, adrenal glands and also from one lung to another. The spread of the cancer brings with it the onset of more symptoms like -

1 – Bone pain if the cancer has spread to the bones. The pain is felt in the back bone or vertebrae, the thigh bones and the bones making up the ribs.
2 – Headaches, weakness of vision, numbness of appendages, dizziness and seizures if the spread of the cancer is to the brain.
3 – Jaundice is caused when the liver is affected by the liver. This is usually not detected and is discovered much later. Initial symptoms of the cancer spreading to liver are nonexistent.
4 – If the spread of cancer affects the lymph nodes then lumps appear on the surface of the body usually in the neck or above the collar bone.

Clubbed fingers, anemia, fatigue, weight loss, muscle weakness, skin rashes, low sodium content, degeneration of brain etc are all symptoms that have been found to exist in all types of cancer including lung cancer. Incidental chest x rays performed for other infections help in the identification of the condition since there are no specific symptoms that point towards cancer of the lung.

Online Nursing Schools – What’s The Catch?

An online nursing school sounds like the perfect solution for students who are frustrated by the traditional nursing school waiting lists. Going to school on your own time, making your own schedule, no annoying commutes, working and taking classes at the same time…it’s the ideal scenario for many a wanna-be nurse.

So why doesn’t everyone sign up? Why are there still waiting lists at the community colleges and state colleges and even expensive private colleges?

Well, there’s a catch.

You must first have some sort of healthcare degree such as a degree in Licensed Practical Nursing, paramedic, or respiratory therapy, before you can attend an online nursing school.

There are good reasons for this. Student nurses must work under the direction of a trained registered nurse, who trains them and watches them as they interact with patients and push meds. You do NOT want to be cared for by a nurse who learned everything online. It just isn’t possible, or safe.

An online nursing school is designed for the working healthcare professional. And even then, the student will work with someone in their area who coordinates clinicals at local hospitals and other healthcare facilities under the supervision of a registered nurse who is working with the online school. Studying only gets you so far when you’re a student nurse; practical real world experience is an absolute must.

So, while an online degree program sounds ideal, there are some practical limitations. It will allow those with the appropriate healthcare certificate to advance their careers, make more money, and have more job opportunities, but unfortunately there is no way for a person with no healthcare experience at all to get their education completely online.

Bed Wetting Children

Many parents worry when their child continues to wet at night after they have become dry during the day. Some children do stop bed wetting at 2 -3 years but it does vary and can depend on physical development as well as learning to control their bladder. Most are dry by 6 years, although up to 20% still wet occasionally, with a small percentage continuing into their teens. It is more common for boys to have a bed wetting problem than girls.

To stop bed wetting a child has to learn to recognise when their bladder is full and to be able to hold it. A newborn baby is unable to do this. A physical problem such as a small, underdeveloped bladder may cause difficulties, but bed wetting may also be genetic, many children have a parent who also bed wet.

Having a child who wets the bed is a nuisance, both for the child and the parents. Many children produce a lot of urine at night and standard diapers can leak. If the child is still young, night diapers are the easiest solution, until they reach an age when you feel you should be training them. Leaving them in diapers means that the necessary training does not take place. At some point this has to happen and initially there are likely to be accidents. Some parents decide the best solution is to use a mattress protector so that if an accident does occur only a sheet and night wear needs changing.

If a child continues regular bed wetting beyond the age of 5-6 years, or if you are concerned, you should consult your physician to make sure there is no medical problem. Many children will wet occasionally and this can be caused by anxiety, for example an upset in the family or starting a new school. If the bed wetting continues when a child has been dry previously, advice should be sought.

Do not give a child too much to drink before bedtime, but ensure they are hydrated and that they go to the bathroom before bed. Some parents will wake the child to use a potty or the bathroom before retiring themselves. Many children barely wake when this happens, it all depends on the individual child.

Bed wetting alarms, that sound at the first hint of moisture, are useful and there are also vibrating watches that can be set at intervals during the night to remind a child to use the bathroom. These help a child to feel adult and in control. Make sure the route to the bathroom is well lit and you can hear if they call for any help.

Most children will grow out of bed-wetting, but it can be frustrating while it is happening. Never scold or make a big issue of it and hopefully it will become a thing of the past.

10 Natural Remedies to Reduce Muscle Pain and Inflammation

If you suffer from muscle or joint pain you know how much it can impact your life. From not being able to play active sports to missing out on family fun – the effects can be far-reaching and upsetting. So, its natural that we search for pain remedies.

Almost everyone is familiar with pain relief formulas. Over 30 billion over-the- counter tablets and 70 million prescriptions are sold annually just in the USA. Known as ‘Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs’ (NSAIDs), a few commonly known names include Aspirin, Ibuprofin, Advil, and Motrin as well as prescription products like Celebrex and Vioxx. What most people might not know is that over 16,000 Americans die from NSAIDs a year and approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for NSAID related gastrointestinal complications.(1)

There is an alternative. Natural pain relief therapies can decrease inflammation and help repair tissues. The following are some starting points for investigating natural solutions further:

1. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night: During the deeper stages of sleep the human body produces growth hormone, which results in tissue healing and repair. Inadequate amounts of sleep contribute to pain. Natural sleep remedies that can help you get a deep and restorative sleep are Melatonin, Hydroxy L- tryptophan (5-HTP), Calcium, Mangesium and colloidal gold. You can also listen to relaxing music – try searching on iTunes for ocean sounds.

2.Take a green-lipped mussel oil supplement: If you suffer from pain, swelling or other symptoms commonly associated with arthritis, you may benefit from taking green-lipped mussel oil from New Zealand. In a clinical trial conducted at the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital in Glasgow, UK, preparations of green-lipped mussel extract were shown to benefit 76 percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients and 70 percent of osteoarthritic patients (2) The omega-3s contained in green-lipped mussel oils (more potent than fish oils) cannot be manufactured by our body and decrease inflammation. The EPA and DHA essential fatty acids have been so effective that some people have been able to discontinue their use of other medications altogether.3. Take MSM, or “organic sulphur”. It can lessen inflammation, pain, and stiffness due to arthritis, muscle, or back pain and helps to balance the blood chemistry in these conditions. MSM helps supply the sulfur amino acids needed for healing.

4. Massage a blend of essential oils of arnica, Calendula and St John’s work into the affected painful area. Applying essential oils directly on the area nourishes cells and enables the body to metabolize waste and heal injuries more quickly. Herb Pharm makes a a blend called “Trauma Oil” which is very effective. Essential oils can help relax tense muscles and improve circulation.

5. Eat a whole food, mineral rich diet with plenty of vegetables and whole grains. Vegetable juices and green chlorophyll-rich foods can help relieve muscle inflammations by promoting the elimination of toxins from the body. Cut back on the amount of meat containing large amounts of saturated fat, which impacts the effective functioning of the liver – possibly leading to inflammation and irritation. Animal fats also contain arachadonic acid which can stimulate inflammation.

6. Take Glucosamine sulfate: Glucosamine is a naturally occurring element in the body that plays a crucial role in the building and healing of cartilage. Glucosamine may be efficient in treating and even delaying the progression of osteoarthritis. Some studies have hinted that glucosamine may be as effective as NSAIDs in treating joint conditions, while having fewer gastrointestinal side effects.

7. Magnetic therapy: Magnetic therapy is a safe method of applying magnetic fields to the body for therapeutic purposes. It helps speed the healing process and improve quality of sleep without any adverse side effects. A study from the University of Virginia showed that that a magnetic field of moderate strength can result in significant reduction of swelling when applied immediately after an inflammatory injury. Dilation of blood vessels is a major cause of swelling, and it’s thought that the magnets worked by limiting blood flow to the affected area. Individuals wearing magnetic jewelry have reported diminished muscle soreness and lessening of cramps. Try sleeping on a magnet mattress pad to help ease the pain of muscle soreness or apply magnet straps to sore muscle or tendonitis areas.

8. Take Vitamin D: Researched conducted by the University of Minnesota found that 93% of all subjects with non-specific musculoskeletal pain were vitamin D deficient. Taking Vitamin D and CoQ10 can help alleviate muscle pain caused by cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. Vitamin D can also be synthesized naturally by the body upon exposure to sunlight.

9.Cayenne pepper: A teaspoon of cayenne shaken in 2 ounces of olive oil can be used as an ointment and rubbed directly into sore muscles. Cayenne contains capsaicin which eventually inhibits secretion of the neurotransmitter Substance P, that transmits pain to the brain, lessening muscle soreness, sprains and cramps.

10. Try an Epsom salt bath: The magnesium sulfate of Epsom Salt acts as a muscle relaxant, and by easing muscle pain it helps the body to eliminate harmful substances. Due to changes in agriculture in the past century, most Americans are deficient in Magnesium. Studies show increased magnesium levels from soaking in a bath enriched with Epsom salt! Magnesium and sulfate are both easily absorbed through the skin. Fill a bathtub with water as hot as you can stand. Add 2 cups of Epsom salts. The heat of the bath will increase circulation and reduce inflammation.

Understanding Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal resulting in a lack of space to accommodate the nerves.

The spinal canal contains the nerves that connect to the skin and muscles of the legs. A normal size canal has sufficient space to hold these nerves. But, as a person ages, the canal is subject to narrowing. The narrowing may not always result in problems. But if the narrowing causes pinching of the spinal nerves, problems will develop.

Spinal stenosis isn’t always caused by degeneration due to age. It can also be due to tumors, herniated discs, and injuries resulting from accidents. Spinal stenosis can even be present at birth but this is rare.

The symptoms of spinal stenosis vary depending upon the location of the compressed nerve. If the nerves in your neck or shoulder are pinched, you will experience pain in this area.

If the pressure is on the nerves that control your balance, you will tend to be clumsy or fall easily.

When the stenosis results from a herniated disc, the pain will begin in your hip or buttocks and travel down the back of your leg. In this case, the pain is confined to one side of your body but increases when you sit.

If the pinched nerves are in your lower lumbar region, you can have a condition known as false claudication. People with this problem have pain and cramping in their legs make it difficult to stand straight in one position for long periods of time. Sitting down relieves the discomfort. Walking is easier when bending forward which is why many people with spinal stenosis prefer to shop at stores that have shopping carts. Leaning forward on the cart makes walking much easier. False claudication also makes downhill walking difficult.

There is another form of claudication called vascular claudication, which is a blockage in the arteries in the legs. This also causes pain and cramping but unlike false claudication, it gets worse when walking up hill and gets better when you stand still.

Other symptoms of spinal stenosis are numbness in the arms, hands, feet, or legs and loss of bladder or bowel control. People who experience the numbness need to be careful, as it is possible to injure the body part and not be aware of it due to reduced sensitivity.

Anyone have problems with bowel or bladder control need to consult their physician immediately.

Doctors use radiographs and MRI’s (magnetic resonance imaging) to diagnose spinal stenosis. The radiographs show whether arthritis is present and if there is any slippage of the vertebrae. The MRI scan is needed to detect whether or not there is any pinching of the nerves. There are also special tests available for people who cannot have an MRI.

There are two basic types of treatment for spinal stenosis – surgical and nonsurgical.

Nonsurgical treatments involve physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, and epidural steroid injections.

People need to be cautious about the anti-inflammatory medications as many of these have serious side effects. They should be thoroughly discussed with the doctor prior to taking the medications.

The steroid medication is injected directly into the nerve roots within the spinal canal. There are less side effects with this treatment and sometimes it will allow patients to avoid surgery.

The non-surgical treatments are only useful for providing relief from symptoms. They do not decrease the narrowing of the canal.

There are two types of surgical treatments. One, called decompression, consists of removing the bone and soft tissues that are pinching the nerve.

The other involves a spinal fusion during which two or more vertebrae are permanently fused together.

Surgery is usually viewed as a last resort to be attempted when all other treatments fail. However, if there is loss of bladder or bowel control, surgery will be performed immediately.

Heart Disease Information That Can Save Your Life

Heart disease is extremely common, and in various years, on and off, it has been the leading cause of death in the United States. About 700,000 people die from it in any given year, so it definitely pays to know all you can about heart ailments and get sound, reliable information to keep yourself in-the-know about symptoms, tests, and treatments.

What exactly is heart disease? Well, it is not one particular condition; it is a broadly-used term to describe any number of conditions. Such specific conditions include: angina, coronary disease, heart attack, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac failure, acute coronary syndrome, peripheral artery disease and rheumatic cardiac disease.

The most common type is coronary heart disease (CHD), which can lead to heart attacks or even strokes. With CHD, the veins and arteries become clogged with plaque, which reduces the ability of blood to flow properly so damage may occur from lack of oxygen to the heart muscle. Many people have chest pain, chest heaviness, or extreme fatigue that leads doctors to pursue tests to indicate or rule out CHD, but there are also significant numbers of people who have no symptoms before they have their first attack.

With the high incidence of heart disease in this country and also throughout other parts of the world, it definitely pays to know your health history and to get accurate information so you know what things signal problems, what to do in case of an attack or angina, what to expect if you are found to have it, and how to live a healthier lifestyle to avoid or lessen your chances of developing heart disease.
